What Is Trauma?

Trauma is the lasting emotional response to an experience that felt overwhelming, unsafe, or out of your control. It can develop after a single event or build gradually over time.

People usually come to us for trauma counselling for many different reasons, including:

  • Childhood trauma, abuse, or neglect

  • Attachment difficulties or relational trauma from early life

  • Birth trauma, for parents, partners, or people who have experienced a traumatic labour or delivery

  • Accidents, medical trauma, or sudden illness

  • Domestic abuse or coercive control

  • Bereavement, loss, or grief that hasn't shifted

  • Trauma connected to work, such as first responders or those in high-stress roles

  • Complex or repeated trauma over time

  • Sexual violence, abuse or harassment

  • Harassment, discrimination or bullying

Trauma affects people differently. Some people experience flashbacks, nightmares, or a persistent sense of danger. Others feel emotionally numb, disconnected, or unable to trust themselves or other people. There's no single way to experience trauma, and no single way to recover from it.

Trauma Therapy at Sheffield Mind

Our trauma therapists in Sheffield work with you at your pace, helping you to make sense of what happened and gradually reduce the hold it has on your life. Our therapists can teach you about how and why your body and brain respond to trauma, what happens to your nervous systems when you experience a trigger for your trauma, and how to create your own safety.  Trauma therapy isn't about revisiting painful memories for the sake of it, it's about finding a way to carry your experiences differently, so they're no longer taking over.

Sessions draw on evidence-based approaches, including CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), and are tailored to your individual history, needs, and pace. We won't push you faster than you're ready to go.

How Trauma Counselling at Sheffield Mind Works

We begin with a relaxed, informal conversation to understand your situation and what you're hoping to get from therapy. There's no pressure to share everything straight away.

Regular sessions

Sessions are one-to-one and last around 60 minutes. We'll agree on a schedule that works for you, and appointments can take place in-person, online or over the phone.

A safe, confidential space

Everything you share is confidential within professional and ethical guidelines. You stay in control of what you explore and when.

FAQs

Do I need a GP referral for trauma therapy?

No. You can refer yourself directly, just get in touch by phone, email, or through our online referral form.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your history and what you're working through. We'll talk through this with you from the start and review progress throughout. Trauma therapy often benefits from a longer course of sessions, but we'll work at a pace that's right for you.

Is trauma counselling confidential?

Yes. All sessions are confidential within professional and ethical guidelines.

What if I'm not sure whether my experience counts as trauma?

You don't need a label or a diagnosis. If something has happened to you that's still affecting how you feel, think, or relate to others, it's worth talking to someone.

How much does trauma therapy cost?

£50.00 per session. All proceeds are reinvested into Sheffield Mind's free mental health services for people across Sheffield.
