Why Young People Might Need Therapy

Young people sometimes struggle to express their emotions and how they are feeling, and as a result, these feelings may manifest as anger, dependency, stress, sadness, or other behaviours that are out of character.

Private counselling for children and young people provides a safe and consistent environment in which they can explore their thoughts and emotions, gain a better understanding of their experiences, and develop healthy ways to process and manage them.

Bereavement Counselling for Children and Young People

Bereavement at a young age can have a profound and lasting impact. Without the right support, children may struggle to process their grief or make sense of their emotions. Providing a safe and supportive environment early on can play a crucial role in helping them adjust and build emotional resilience.

Our counselling services for children and young people offer a calm, consistent, and child-centred space where they can explore their thoughts and feelings at their own pace. Through this process, they are supported in understanding their experiences and developing healthy ways to cope with loss and change.

In some cases, emotional difficulties may present through behavioural challenges. If a child’s behaviour is becoming a concern, therapy can provide valuable support. Our therapists work collaboratively with children to understand the underlying causes of their behaviour and help them develop more positive and constructive ways of responding to difficult emotions and situations.

By addressing both emotional wellbeing and behavioural needs, early therapeutic support can make a meaningful difference, helping children to feel heard, understood, and better equipped to navigate life’s challenges.

How our therapists work with young people

Not all children find it easy to talk about their feelings, and some may not yet have the words to express what they are experiencing. That's why our therapists use a range of creative approaches, including play and arttherapy, to help children communicate in ways that feel natural and comfortable.

By using play as a child's language and creative activities as their means of expression, we can help them safely explore emotions, process difficult experiences or trauma, develop coping strategies and work through behavioural challenges in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Our goal is to help children build emotional resilience, improve their wellbeing, and feel understood, heard, and supported.

Working with Neurodiversity

We also have experience supporting neurodivergent children and young people, including those with autism and ADHD. Our therapists can adapt sessions to meet individual needs, helping children engage in a way that feels safe, accessible and appropriate for them. We understand that many families are facing long waits for specialist services and our aim is to provide timely, compassionate support while young people are waiting for assessment or ongoing care.

Our goal is to help children build emotional resilience, improve their wellbeing, and feel understood, valued, and supported.

FAQs

Do I need a GP referral for children's therapy?

No. You can contact Sheffield Mind directly and refer your child yourself.

What age of children do you work with?

Please get in touch to discuss your child's age and needs. We'll let you know whether we're the right fit and if not, point you in the right direction.

How long does therapy for children take?

This varies depending on the child and what they're working through. We'll discuss this with you from the outset and review progress throughout.

Will I be told what my child says in sessions?

As a general rule, we wouldn’t share information with parents outside of risk and safeguarding.

What if I have questions about the counselling sessions?

If you have questions about what is going on in the counselling sessions, we ask that you email your questions to [email protected]. The therapist will then discuss with the young person, in their next session, what they feel comfortable with sharing with you. We ask that try not to ask these directly to our therapists, as it will reduce the time your young person gets for their session.

Will any information be shared with anyone else?

The sessions with your young person are confidential. This can enable your young person to feel comfortable to open without repercussions. There are some occasions where information may need to share without the organisation. However, our therapists would only share the content of sessions:

  • If the young person requests, and feels that it is in their best interests, that certain information is passed on.

  • When we believe there is a danger that your child may cause harm to themselves or others, or when they are at risk of harm from another.

How much does private children's therapy cost?

£60.00 per session
