Between 2013 and 2015 there were 159 suicides in the city of Sheffield, one every seven days. The majority of these were men.

There is clearly a significant impact beyond the suicide that includes family, friends, work colleagues and the wider community and to address the need for better education and training around this difficult subject we developed our Tooled Up programme.

Tooled up is a £20K programme funded by the People's Postcode Lottery and run by Sheffield Mind to increase the level of awareness and confidence, around men’s mental health and reduce the risk of suicide in Sheffield. It is a community based, peer led approach that encompasses training, including mental health awareness and communication skills, and a suite of materials to help upskill people to better engage with mental health.

We developed marketing materials, a training package, and a toolkit to promote better understanding of mental health issues and give people to the tools to deal with friends and colleagues who might be strugglimg with their mental health.
