The South Yorkshire Community Foundation fund our 'Friendly Friday' drop-in sessions, which were developed in response to people calling at our door, asking for advice, support and wanting to know what activities we were offering for people with mental health needs. These people were telling staff they were isolated and lonely, some had had their service provision cut or did not have the confidence to engage with formal group activity so we came up with a solution .

Most of our services need a professional referral, so Friendly Friday is a direct access 'open house' which takes place every Friday afternoon from 1.00 - 2.00 p.m.. Many attendees have spoken about the crippling effects of loneliness and isolation and how coming to the sessions helps them feel accepted and safe.

The sessions are facilitated by a member of staff and supported by volunteers who help meet and greet and introduce newcomers to the regular attendees. Attendees can chose to participate in games and activities or simply chat to one another, using their lived experience to support and empathise with other participants.

The sessions greatly help people’s confidence and can increase social skills which will help people participate more widely in the community, thus increasing a sense of belonging and helping decrease stigma.

The sessions are open to all and there is no need to book, simply turn up on the day and take part. Sessions take place between 1.00 - 3.00 p.m. at the Wellbeing Centre, 110 Sharrow Lane, Sheffield S11 8AL
