DOMESTIC ABUSE AWARENESS TRAINING
Aims of the training:
- to raise awareness of the realities and effects of domestic abuse;
- to help workers to develop their skills and confidence in tackling the issues;
- to identify resources available in the city to support their work.
The Forum offers a two stage domestic abuse awareness course. Stage 1, Domestic Abuse and Multi-agency Working, provides a broad overview of the social and personal aspects and effects of domestic abuse. The Stage 2 Skills Workshop is designed to give a more in depth understanding of domestic abuse issues. It also aims to help develop workers' skills and confidence in enabling disclosures, safety planning and working together to provide ongoing support to people living with, or recovering from domestic abuse.
The courses can be organised and co-ordinated through the Domestic Abuse Forum, but will normally be delivered by trainers from the Women Against Violence Network Trainers' Pool, who all have extensive experience of working in the voluntary sector to provide frontline domestic abuse services, and deliver tailored training and consultancy to other agencies.
Most courses are multi-agency to promote networking on the day, and more integrated agency responses to domestic abuse afterwards.
For single-agency events, the Trainers will need to meet beforehand with a contact person to devise appropriate case study material, in order to make the programme as useful as possible to their agency staff.
Shorter courses and briefings can also be arranged, to suit the levels of responsibility or working patterns of the people involved.
