Social Workers can provide access to residential and support services, day centres and respite care. These help with difficulties in day to day living, for example they can act as advocates for the person with mental health problems with other organisations such as fuel companies, the Department of Social Security and landlords.

"Approved Social Workers" are qualified social workers who have undergone further training in mental health issues and mental health law. They have specific roles to perform under present mental health legislation. Most social workers working with the severely mentally ill are Approved Social Workers.
